Why The Designed Edge exists

Dental research grows faster than any clinician can read it. Thousands of papers a year, most of them irrelevant to the decision in front of you, a few of them genuinely important and easy to miss. The practical question is never what was published — it is what, if anything, should change in the operatory on Monday.

The Designed Edge exists to answer that question honestly. We examine the evidence, make the uncertainty visible rather than hiding it behind confident prose, and translate what survives into decisions a practicing dentist can actually use. When the literature is thin we say so. When it contradicts common practice we say that too.

It is written for practicing dentists and for the students becoming them. Patient education has moved to raybesharati.com, where it belongs.

Independence

The Designed Edge is an independent, clinician-led publication. Editorial conclusions are not influenced by dental manufacturers, sponsors, or advertisers. Commercial relationships and conflicts of interest are disclosed with each article. See Conflicts & Funding.

How it is made

Read Mission & Vision for what this publication is trying to be, Editorial Standards for the rules it holds itself to, and Review Methods for how evidence is searched, appraised, and updated. The publication is edited by Ray Besharati, DDS, MS; the editorial board is being assembled.

Corrections

When something here is wrong it is corrected in the open and logged, and every evidence article carries a version history. See Corrections.

What this is not

The Designed Edge is professional education, not clinical care. Nothing published here is a diagnosis, a treatment recommendation, or a substitute for an in-person examination. Reading it, subscribing to it, or corresponding with it does not create a doctor-patient relationship.

Clinical practice

Ray Besharati, DDS, MS is a practicing dentist in Washington State. Clinical practice ↗
